Irene Holmes (nee Thornton) was born on December 31, 1926 in Batley Carr, Dewsbury to parents Sally and Lawrence Thornton. There were two older sisters Agnes and Margaret and an older brother Joe. Later, other siblings Winnie, Lawrence and Gerald were born.
